INGE GNATT PSYCHOLOGIST

ABOUT ME

Hi, my name is Inge Gnatt and I am a registered psychologist based in Melbourne, Australia. I have a Bachelor of Dance, Graduate Diploma in Psychology and Bachelor of Psychology (Honours). I trained in clinical psychology (PhD) at Swinburne University of Technology in Hawthorn, Melbourne. I have experience working across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings with individuals, families, and groups across the lifespan.

MY EXPERIENCE AND WORK

I support adults experiencing a range of mental health difficulties and life challenges, with a particular interest in eating and body image concerns. I work from a trauma-informed perspective that emphasises collaboration, transparency, and empowerment, always promoting choice and respecting each person’s unique experience. I originally trained as a classical dancer and love supporting other dancers to thrive in their careers and navigate transitions with dignity and agency.

My work is grounded in a strong evidence base, and I have been a Lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology since 2023, where I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervise placements, and conduct research. My PhD research focused on the use of Compassion-Focused Therapy delivered as a group program for people recovering from trauma symptoms and disordered eating, and this continues to be an area of interest in my work.

  • Registered psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency

  • Associate member of the Australian Psychological Society

  • Member of the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc

  • Member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders

MY APPROACH TO WORKING AS A PSYCHOLOGIST

The way I approach my work is always evolving, because every person I meet is different. One of my greatest strengths is being able to see what people are capable of often before they’re aware of it themselves. I’m comfortable sitting with people through their most difficult moments, and I love witnessing and celebrating them to reach their own goals, in their own way.

I take care to consider the whole person including their mental health, physical wellbeing, relationships, supports, strengths, life circumstances, and values. I understand that what you want from therapy can change. I work collaboratively with other health professionals to support the best possible outcomes for the people who engage in therapy with me. I find this work energising and feel it is a real privilege.

THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES I USE IN THERAPY

I use an integrative approach and typically draw from a combination of elements from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Family-Based Treatment, Compassion-focused Therapy, Mindfulness, Schema therapy, positive psychology. I am also highly engaged in continuing education and supervision to support my development, and to offer the people I work with the best therapy that I am able to.

GETTING STARTED IN THERAPY

After receiving a referral and prior to commencing therapy with me, we will have an initial 10-15 minute conversation to understand what you are looking for and importantly, for you to meet me and decide if it feels like a good fit. I appreciate that seeing a psychologist can be both exciting and daunting and I want you to feel comfortable. If I think that it may be more appropriate for you to see someone else, then I will speak to you about that and make some suggestions.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU SEE A PSYCHOLOGIST AT EIR PRACTICE

I offer face-to-face and online psychological therapy, with each session lasting 50 minutes. A referral is not required to access therapy; however, you may choose to obtain one to be eligible for funding (for more, see clinic information).

We’ll begin by developing a shared understanding of the concerns that have brought you to along, and from there, we can explore treatment options together. To support consistency and stability, we can arrange a regular appointment time at a mutually agreed frequency which will be revised collaboratively.
