Trauma &
PTSD

Trauma exposure is something that most people will encounter in their life. Fortunately, our brains are so incredible, that with the right support we will often process what has happened, and bounce back.

For some people, the effects of trauma exposure can be long lasting. These effects can impact on many parts of our life, and can lead to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There are lots of reasons that this might happen, and fortunately there is support available.

Signs & Symptoms of PTSD

Responses associated with PTSD may vary from person to person, but can include the following symptoms:

  • Intrusive memories or nightmares

  • Avoiding reminders of the event

  • Feeling numb or disconnected

  • Being easily startled or constantly on edge

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Negative thoughts about yourself or the world

  • Irritability or anger

  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating

When To Get Help & What Can We Do?

If the effects of trauma exposure are lasting more than a month, causing distress, or interfering with life, it may be useful to seek treatment.

It is important that this is done at your own pace, in a respectful manner where you have autonomy and choice, and trust in the people you are working with.

Treatment can help and may include:

  • Trauma focused psychological therapies such as EMDR, cognitive behavioural therapy, or compassion focused approaches

  • Learning grounding and self soothing skills

  • Building safety and trust in relationships

  • Managing symptoms with mindfulness and relaxation strategies

  • Medication if recommended by a doctor
